Blood pressure is one of the important indicators reflecting a pet’s health status. Pets of different sizes have different normal blood pressure ranges. Understanding these differences helps pet owners detect health problems in their pets in a timely manner.
Take dogs as an example. The normal range of systolic blood pressure for small dogs is generally 90 – 120mmHg, and the diastolic blood pressure is 60 – 80mmHg. The systolic blood pressure of medium – sized dogs is usually 120 – 140mmHg, and the diastolic blood pressure is 80 – 90mmHg. The normal range of systolic blood pressure for large dogs is 140 – 160mmHg, and the diastolic blood pressure is 90 – 100mmHg.
The blood pressure range of cats is different from that of dogs. Their normal range of systolic blood pressure is 105 – 181mmHg, and the diastolic blood pressure is 63 – 102mmHg. It should be noted that a pet’s blood pressure can fluctuate due to many factors. For example, age, breed, gender, and stress status may all cause changes in blood pressure. Under normal circumstances, the blood pressure of untrained and unanesthetized dogs and cats should generally not exceed 160/100mmHg. However, some breeds, such as sighthounds, may have a normal blood pressure higher than this range.
Accurate measurement of a pet’s blood pressure requires the use of a professional sphygmomanometer and a suitable cuff, and it is usually operated by a veterinarian or a professionally trained person. If a pet owner suspects that their pet has abnormal blood pressure, they must not judge by themselves. They should take the pet to a pet hospital in time and let a professional veterinarian conduct an examination and diagnosis. Only in this way can the health of the pet be effectively guaranteed, allowing them to accompany us for a longer time.
